What to Expect in Class
Prepare yourself for deep relaxation when you attend a restorative class. The lights may be dimmed and soft music played. In these passive poses, the focus is on ease and release. You may even fall asleep. This can be a sign that the nervous system is recalibrating to a "rest and digest" state vs. "fight or flight." You will continue to focus on your breath throughout. At the end of the session, your body feels open and refreshed.
Bolster: A yoga bolster is like a body pillow but firmer and either rectangular or circular in shape. Its main purpose is to create relaxation, help soften a posture, or aid in opening the body. A bolster is commonly used in prenatal, restorative, and Iyengar based classes.
At Home Replacement: Use a couch cushion or large pillow. Choose one that is firm so that you have support and it doesn't flatten with weight.
Block: The purpose of the Yoga block is to provide more comfort while practicing and help to improve the alignment of the body. ... Depending on the pose, Yoga blocks can be placed under hands, feet, or bottom to get the most out of stretches and to get into the correct position while keeping the body safe
At Home Replacement: Use a book or two. You can wrap them to soften the texture
Strap: Straps are mainly used for stretching so that users achieve a wide range of motion. Even people who stretch their legs while doing sitting poses can benefit from these straps. One technique is to grab both ends and pull it towards them while leaning into the pose.
At Home Replacement: Use your husband's necktie, the belt to your bathrobe, or a long winter scarf
Yoga Mat: Yoga mats are specially fabricated mats used to prevent hands and feet slipping during asana practice in modern yoga as exercise.
At Home Replacement: Use a blanket or beach towel
Eye Mask: An eye mask is not a traditional yoga prop. I added it because I found myself looking around to validate that I was in the proper position. However, restorative yoga is a personal practice and your shape or body movement should be your own. By using the mask to "shut down my eyes", I am able to block out distractions and focus on my practice.
At Home Replacement: choose a hand towel
